Flip (Flipgrid)

Features

Flip, formerly known as Flipgrid, is a video discussion platform that encourages student engagement and collaboration. It allows teachers to create discussion topics where students respond with short video clips. Flip offers features like video editing tools, emojis, and stickers for customisation. Teachers can moderate responses, provide feedback, and create a safe, interactive environment. The platform supports asynchronous learning, making it flexible for different schedules and promoting student voice and creativity in expressing their ideas.

Use

Flip is a web-based digital tool to help students connect in virtual classrooms and engage with content more deeply. It can also be used in face-to-face classrooms to increase collaboration. Students can record videos of their work, presentations, or projects to share with their peers. They are then able to post a video response in Flipgrid under originally posted videos.

Description of the use in class

Students interact with one another through Flipgrid by using videos as their primary tool. The app allows students to record their responses as many times as they need, and when they feel comfortable with one version of their response, post it. They have more time and space to give their take on a discussion after using sufficient time and space to record their answer. Therefore, students can interact with the class, and while others can still see and hear them, the pressure of being there living in the classroom is gone.

age

Flip is used by all age groups, including the target group of 6-9 years.

Learning outcomes

Flipgrid can help students practice describing what they learned, explain how what they learned relates to their own experiences, and indicate areas where they need clarification or additional resources. This is a great time for students to use their voice to connect ideas to their own experiences.

Reviews / Recommendations

Reviews for Flipgrid are generally positive, with many educators praising its effectiveness in fostering student engagement, amplifying student voice, and facilitating interactive learning experiences.

Example of the tool as a good practice

The analysis of some studies showed that the flipped classroom approach has a positive effect on learning, reducing cognitive load, involvement, accuracy, motivation, attitude, and satisfaction with the course and self-efficacy in higher education, and one of the most important challenges of the flipped .

One of the best things about Flip is the ability to interact using video, such as face-to-face in the real world, but without the pressure of a live classroom. Since students are given the space and time to respond when they're ready, it makes educational engagement possible for even more anxious students who might ordinarily feel left out in class.

Inclusion

Flipgrid empowers all students, including those who may be reluctant to speak up in traditional classroom settings, to share their thoughts and ideas. This amplification of student voice fosters a more inclusive learning environment where every student feels valued and heard.
