ClassDojo is a free platform.

It can be accessed through any web browser, iOS and Android devices.

Use

ClassDojo is a classroom management platform involving teachers, parents and students. It aims to manage a school classroom based on student behaviour scores through a user-friendly interface, which supports various customisation options to suit the needs of each class. In this way, if the student does a brilliant job, he/she will earn points; on the other hand, if he/she disturbs classmates, he/she will receive a negative score for this behaviour.

Description of the use in class

Classdojo classroom and home are easy to manage and have an accessible interface for teachers, parents and students.

In the classroom, teachers can keep track of attendance, give positive feedback in real-time through stickers or badges, and record behaviours that the student needs to modify or improve.

In Classdojo web there is a function called Class Story, with which the teacher can upload videos or photos accompanied by allusive messages. In this way, interaction with the family is promoted and the activities carried out are shown.

The positive thing about this kind of digital wall is that the progress of the children can be seen so that parents can reinforce their children's learning at home, thus motivating the student as a whole.

At home, the Classdojo app serves as a communication bridge between teachers and parents, as well as a real-time guide to the children's learning process, their progress or stagnation.

Parents can communicate personally with the teacher through private messaging, clarify doubts, raise situations or give suggestions regarding their child's performance. They can also discuss the Class Story in public with other parents.

Once students arrive home they can view their progress, personalise their avatar, review the class, and check their scores.

All these benefits are obtained from three types of accounts using the interface:

The teacher account: Who creates the classrooms (can have several at the same time), assigns the codes for students and representatives to open their accounts, sets the scores, awards badges, and shares photos.
The parent's account: Can view their child's progress, have access to their grades, bonuses or negative evaluations, and send and receive messages from the teacher.
The pupil's account: Can have their profile and check the assessments assigned to them by the teacher. They do not have access to messages between their parents and the teacher.

Age group

The recommended age of use of Classdojo is for pupils between 6 and 12 years of age.

Example of the tool as a good practice

The teacher Elena (Seville, Spain) implemented ClassDojo as part of their classroom management and student engagement strategy for a group of 8–10-year-old students. The goal was to create a positive learning environment using gamification principles that reward desired behaviours and encourage collaboration between students, teachers, and parents.

Implementation:

The teacher set up a ClassDojo classroom where each student was assigned a personal profile and a customisable avatar. Positive behaviours, such as staying on task, helping peers, or demonstrating creativity, were rewarded with points. The teacher also designed custom badges for achievements, like 'Super Helper' or 'Quiet Leader', which were displayed on a virtual class leaderboard.

Parents were invited to join ClassDojo through private accounts, allowing them to monitor their children’s progress and engage with their learning journey in real-time. The teacher frequently used the Class Story feature to share updates, including photos of students working on projects, short videos of classroom activities, and celebratory posts highlighting student achievements.

Inclusion

Elena’s students of all abilities felt recognised for their contributions, promoting a culture of respect and collaboration.

ClassDojo is easy for teachers to use. In the classroom, it is used as an incentive for positive behaviours. It is used when students are off-task or noisy, giving other students Dojo points for being on-task or quiet. It is reinforcing others with tons of verbal recognition for desired behaviours in hopes of changing other students' undesired behaviours. Rarely, do teachers use the option of taking points away, but it is usually a big disappointment to students.
